How to set up your Backgammon Board Place your backgammon board in front of you. You will see triangles going around the board. In the middle you will see a bar going across the board. The bar splits the backgammon board into yours and your opponents Home Board and the other side is the Outer Board. Example: you may be white and your home is on the left hand side of the home board side. Your opponent may be red and their home is on the right hand side of the home board. Place the white checkers on the opponents home position (right hand side) and the red checkers are placed in the opponents home position (left hand side) of the backgammon board. Each player has 15 checkers of his own color. There are a total of 24 triangles called posts. Each opponent arranges 2 checkers on their twenty-four-point post, 5 checkers on their thirteen-point post, 3 on their eight-point post and 5 on their six-point post. Object of the Game The object of the game is to get all your checkers off the board before your opponent. You must be clever in how you choose to move your checkers on the backgammon board. Ready to Play Each player rolls one die. The player with the higher number begins the game. Roll the dice and move your checker or checkers according to the amount shown. For example: if you roll a 6 and a 5, you may either move one checker a total of 11 posts or move one checker 6 posts and another checker 5 posts. You can only move the amount shown on one die or the total of both dice. You can move your checker to any post that is empty or has no more than one of your opponents checkers Making a Backgammon When you land on a point that has only one of your opponents checkers then you have made Backgammon. Your opponent must move their checker to the bar, the bar going across the middle of the backgammon board. Removing Checkers from the Bar When you have a checker/checkers on the bar, you must move the checker off the bar before any other checkers are played. To do this, roll the dice and move your checker to any post on your opponents side (the side you stated playing the game) that is not occupied by more than one of your opponents checkers. If you are unable to do so then you forfeit your turn. Rolling Doubles If you roll doubles, then you may have up to a total of 4 separate moves. Example: You roll a 5 and a 5. You may move 5 points 4 times. Winning the Game You must move all your checkers into your home board before you can begin taking checkers off the backgammon board. This is called Bearing Off. Once all of your checkers are in home board you may begin removing your checkers by moving the amount shown on the dice. These basic instructions will help you get started playing backgammon. There are many variations to the game and all are as fun and exciting to play.
